CORTEN Steel adds unique rusted appearance  and industrial aesthetic to your outdoor space.

What is CORTEN® Steel?
  • A weathering steel:

is a type of steel alloy that is designed to rust and form a protective layer of rust on its surface, which then slows down the corrosion process. This unique property is due to the presence of certain alloying elements, primarily copper, that react with the atmosphere to create a patina of rust on the surface of the steel.

  • Corten steel:

is also valued for its durability and low maintenance requirements. The rusted layer on the surface of the steel protects the underlying material from further corrosion, which means that it requires minimal maintenance and can last for many years in outdoor environments.

  • In addition:

to its aesthetic and functional qualities, corten steel is also eco-friendly and sustainable. Unlike other types of steel, corten steel does not require protective coatings or paints, which can be harmful to the environment.

How CORTEN® Steel rust?
  • CORTEN Steel reacts with oxygen in the air and begins to form a layer of rust on its surface. This rusted layer acts as a protective coating that slows down further corrosion of the underlying material.

  • Over time, the rusted layer on the surface of the Corten steel will continue to deepen and develop, creating a unique and distinctive appearance that can vary in color from reddish-brown to deep orange.

How to speed up the CORTEN® Steel rusting process?
Saltwater solution:
Mix together 1 tablespoon of salt per 1 liter of water and spray the solution on the surface of the steel. Allow the steel to dry completely and repeat the process as necessary until the desired level of rust is achieved.
Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide:
Mixing equal parts of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide and spray the solution on the surface of the steel and allow it to dry completely. Repeat the process as necessary until the desired level of rust is achieved.
Accelerated weathering:
Simulate this process by wetting the surface of the steel with water and allowing it to dry in the sun. Repeat this process several times to accelerate the formation of a rusted layer on the surface.
